Who Pays

What to talk about: British first dates tend to involve a lot of testing the waters before anything real gets said — which is fine, but try to get to something genuine within the first twenty minutes. Ask about things they've mentioned in their profile, share opinions (not just preferences), and actually listen rather than just waiting for your turn. The classic British mistake is to keep everything so politely surface-level that you finish the drink knowing very little about each other.

Red flags to watch for: Rudeness to bar staff — the most reliable indicator of character in a casual setting. Talking exclusively about themselves. Any pressure, however light, on physical contact. Visible boredom. Constant phone-checking without explanation.

Nerves: Completely normal, and chances are they feel exactly the same. The goal isn't to perform perfectly — it's to see if there's something worth a second date. Slightly awkward and real beats slick and hollow every time.

Who pays in the UK? Generally: whoever suggests the first drink tends to offer. The other person offers to split or get the next one. There's no strong expectation in either direction — the offer to go halves lands completely naturally. On subsequent dates, alternating is the path of least resistance.
