Gaslighting
Reviewed by certified relationship advisors
Toxic relationships rarely announce themselves. They build gradually — behaviours that accumulate until they become the norm.
Common red flags: Controlling who you see, excessive jealousy, constant criticism, isolating you from your support network, dismissing your feelings, emotional manipulation.
Gaslighting: Systematically denying your reality. "You're overreacting." "That never happened." "You're too sensitive." Until you start doubting your own perception.
Love bombing: Overwhelming intensity at the start — constant messages, extravagant gestures, declarations of love far too early. Often followed by sudden withdrawal used as a lever of control.
Leaving safely: If you're afraid of your partner, tell someone you trust. Make a plan. Women's Aid (0808 2000 247) and Refuge offer free, confidential support 24 hours a day. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is 0808 2000 247.
