Money And Dating

The cost of dating in Britain — particularly in London — is a genuine practical concern that doesn't get discussed openly enough.

The cost of living context: London is one of the most expensive cities in Europe. A first date at a London pub easily costs £15-25 each in 2026. Dinner out is significantly more. This is a real consideration for many people.

Splitting the bill: The British default is to offer to split — it's a genuinely egalitarian norm and carries no negative signal. The first drink often gets bought by whoever arrives first or suggested. From the second date: alternating is the path of least resistance.

Cheap first dates that work: A walk somewhere interesting, a free exhibition, a market, a cheap pint at a no-frills local. The quality of the date is almost entirely determined by the quality of the conversation, not the venue. Anyone who judges you for suggesting a cheap first meeting isn't worth impressing.

Class and money: Britain's class consciousness means money, where you went to school, and your accent can carry more weight than they should. It's worth being honest with yourself about whether financial compatibility — not just attraction — matters to you in a longer-term partner.
