Mental Health Relationships

Mental health and relationships are more openly discussed in Britain now than at any previous point — and this is good, even if the conversation can feel awkward.

Disclosing mental health: When you're dating someone and have depression, anxiety, or another condition — when do you mention it? There's no rule. Early enough that it's honest, late enough that you know it's going somewhere. First date is probably too soon. Three months in and things are getting serious is probably too late.

Supporting a partner: Listen without immediately problem-solving. Don't minimise ("just stay positive"). Encourage professional support but don't demand it. Know your own limits — you're a partner, not a therapist.

Resources: Mind (0300 123 3393), NHS Talking Therapies (self-refer via GP or online), Relate (0300 100 1234) for relationship-specific support, Samaritans (116 123) for crisis support any time of day.
