Texting Rules That Matter

Arguments over text always escalate. No exceptions. Without tone, facial expression, or body language, the mind fills in the blanks with whatever anxiety is currently running — and the result is invariably worse than in person.

The one rule: No important conversations over text. The temptation is real — it feels less confrontational. But the outcome is consistently worse.

WhatsApp as the UK default: Like Spain and much of Europe, WhatsApp dominates in British relationships. Voice notes are increasingly common and genuinely useful — a 60-second voice note conveys more than ten texts misread in both directions.

British texting culture: We tend to be quite understated in messages — "sounds good" = I'm really looking forward to this. "Fine" in a message usually means something went wrong. The classic British passive-aggression of the single-word response is real and worth watching for.

When to call: Always for genuine apologies, bad news, anything emotionally important, and when a text exchange has been going round in circles for more than five messages.
